I was up at 6:00. Jane slept later. This was our day to
slowly transition into vacation. We were tired from the two-day drive. Motivation
was not high. We sat around drink coffee for a long time. I made blueberry
pancakes a late breakfast.
While I was making the pancakes, Jane tried to slice a peach
that was not exactly ripe. “We’re having peach chips,” Jane said. “There is no
flavor and no juice.”
“Fiber and vitamins,” I said. The peaches really weren’t
that bad with maple syrup.

We walked up to the office to get fishing licenses and a
dozen leeches. We then sat in the cabin while it rained. The rain stopped, but
it looked like it could start again any minute. We fished from dock without
success until it was time for lunch.
After lunch, I took a nap. Jane and I sat on deck for a while,
then Jane took nap.
Our most ambitious activity of the day was going for a
little walk down the dirt road. Blue flag (wild iris) was blooming near the
creek that separates the office from the parking lot.

Thimbleberry was just
blooming.

We saw a delicate little flower that we did not know. Back at the
cabin, Jane tried to find in among the white flowers in the wildflower book. I pointed
out that flower color was not a particularly stable character and suggested she
try under pink. And there it was--twin flower. We had to take a second look at
the photo to verify that each flower stalk had two flowers. I realized that the
new light fixture was also twin flower done in red.

It looked as if we could grill supper without getting rained
on. I made a foil pack of potatoes, onions, and fresh garlic from the garden. We
drank wine on the deck while Jane cooked the steak and foil pack.
We went to bed with the sound of more rain on
the roof. It rained well into the night. Still no loons.
